The BBC Proms returns to the Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, on Saturday afternoon with a programme of 20th- and 21st-century works.
Composer-conductor George Benjamin is directing new music specialists London Sinfonietta in a concert marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Singing is magnificent mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley.
World premieres are being given of war-themed pieces by Isabel Mundy, Hannah Kendall, George Frederich Haas and Luca Francesconi.
Other works include:
– Stravinsky’s homage to Debussy, the elegant Symphonies of Wind Instruments.
– Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question with its haunting trumpet solo.
– Messiaen’s monumental tribute to the dead of both world wars, Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum.
