Keir Starmer UCLH 2018

Keir Starmer answers questions at UCL

• WE recently heard Keir Starmer speak to a room of over 140 enthusiastic young people and students about the effects of Brexit.

He spoke with clarity and honesty about the situation our country is in. We were therefore concerned by the characterisation of this event in the letter (Platitudes, February 15).

The author of the letter described Sir Keir as “beholden to outdated and nationalistic interests”. This couldn’t be further from the truth. He spoke passionately about the responsibility we have to preserve democracy and listen to voices from across the country.

He spoke about how his experience as an international human rights lawyer cemented his belief in the value of every vote and his drive to protect the rights of EU citizens, who make Camden such an incredible place to live.

He presented a clear vision for a close, collaborative, and internationalist relationship with Europe that only the Labour Party can deliver.

The author continued to describe the difficulties that academics, students and staff at UCL will face as we leave the EU. These challenges are undisputed and it’s crucial that as residents of Camden we push at every level to protect the residents and institutions of our borough.

So we’re sure the author would’ve been keen to listen to Cllr Lazzaro Pietragnoli, also at the event, on how Camden Labour’s Brexit working group – one of the only of its kind in the country – is working hard to get the best deal for the residents of Camden.

The author concludes by stating that the “time for meaningless platitudes” is over. We agree. Which is why we’re proud to be members of Camden Labour, the only party here fighting at all levels for a better country and a better deal for the many.
