Arteta: ‘We made lots of mistakes’
Arsenal boss reflects on Gunners’ disappointing season ahead of final day of the Premier League campaign

MIKEL Arteta has already set his sights on “a creative” pre-season as he moves quickly to put a difficult campaign well and truly behind him.
Arsenal managed to win 3-1 at Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening thanks to injury time goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe.
And with Spurs losing 2-1 to Aston Villa, there is still a chance that the Gunners could sneak into the Europa Conference League on the final day of the season. Arsenal face Brighton at the Emirates on Sunday.
Arteta has already acknowledged that his squad needs an overhaul this summer. And now the Gunners boss has gone even further by admitting the club have “done a lot of things wrong” under his watch.
He said: “I want to reflect [on the season] in the next week or so. I’m sure that we’ve done a lot of things wrong, 100 per cent I can tell you now before going through it.”
Trying to put a positive spin on the direction Arsenal are heading in, Arteta added: “So how am I going to make much better decisions and get the best out of these players, and get the best out of this football club and all the resources that we have?
“I have spent a lot of time and effort identifying critical points to change and then how those changes are going to be made, and in which time-frame we could do them.
“I want to spend time building, creating and with all the foundations that we have in place now, evolving the club in the way that we want to do. I want a pre-season where we can work with the players and create.
“I’m a really creative person, I really want to create and evolve.
“A lot of the time since I’ve come here, I’ve been determined to make some very, very difficult decisions that I have to do.
“But I want to start doing more and more and more, because the capacity that we have to do it is incredible.”
Meanwhile, after the news that defender David Luiz is to leave Arsenal at the end of the season, it has been revealed that talks with Willian are set to take place. The former Chelsea winger still has two years left on his Gunners deal but the 32-year-old has struggled for form under Arteta.
“This season has been difficult and I take full responsibility because I have to be the one getting the best out of him,” Arteta said.
“We had moments but not to the level he did before.
“This is the assessment we are going to do individually with the players and with Edu, the board and the ownership to make the right decisions for the future.”
