ARSENAL fans will be hoping that the Hammers can once again have their say on the final day of the season.

Manchester City welcome West Ham to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday knowing that a victory will see them crowned champions. But the Irons know a thing or two about spoiling a party.

In the infamous “Lasagne-gate” match against Tottenham on the final day of the 2005/06 season West Ham beat their London rivals 2-1 to help Arsenal secure a place in the Champions League at Spurs’ expense. It was later claimed that a pre-match meal of lasagne caused an outbreak of vomiting among the Tottenham players.
West Ham also have experience in stopping a side from Manchester winning the title.

On the final day of the 1994/95 season they beat the odds to snatch a 1-1 draw against United and deny Alex Ferguson’s men their third consecutive Premier League trophy – the title going to Blackburn Rovers.

First and foremost this Sunday Arsenal must take care of their own business by beating an Everton side who will arrive at the Emirates in a relaxed mood having long ended any fears of relegation.

The Gunners have every reason to be confident of achieving that goal in what has been a record-breaking campaign for the north Londoners.

Assessing his side’s winning run since the turn of the year, Mikel Arteta said: “I think it encourages you to win more and to be better equipped and prepared, and [gives you] more confidence to win in different contexts and to bring results in different ways.

“It’s 27 wins in the Premier League [this season]. It’s the most in the history of this football club in 130 years. That’s not progress, that’s history, and that’s very, very difficult to do, especially in the league that we are playing in now.

“A big credit [goes] to the players and the staff for what we are doing. To achieve that with the long history that we have, that’s down a lot to the quality, but as well to the determination and the mentality of this team and how much they want to win.”

With the final day approaching fast, the Gunners boss added: “The players are all buzzing. Fighting for the Premier League in front of our people, with our families who are there. And we’re going to live an amazing day together.

“I can’t wait to live that. Football is about moments and enjoying this journey and that last day is going to be something that I don’t know how many times we’re going to live together.

“So let’s enjoy, let’s prepare what to do, what we have to do, and hopefully a great outcome could happen.”
