Arsenal ace Bellerin: ‘We’re losing against ourselves’

IT’S not just Jack Grealish and the rest of the Aston Villa attack that is worrying Hector Bellerin ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off in the Premier League.

The Arsenal right-back also has every reason to be concerned by some of the dangermen sharing the visitors’ changing room with him at Villa Park – players who are more than capable of preventing the Gunners from picking up the points.

Bellerin is adamant that he and his teammates need to stop “losing against ourselves” if Arsenal are to salvage something from such a topsy-turvy season.

A prime case in point unfolded at Molineux on Tuesday night when the north Londoners snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Wolves. Arsenal were in complete control and cruising towards three points before David Luiz and Bernd Leno were both sent off – giving Wolves all the encouragement they needed to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win.

“We’ve shown that when we’re 11 against 11 on that pitch, it’s completely different,” said Bellerin. “We had complete control in the first half and we probably should have been 2-0 up by the end of it.

“But we paid for those mistakes. I always say that teams are not beating us, we are losing against ourselves. It’s for us to learn. Hopefully this will be the last time that happens. We were on such a good run, had great momentum, and a great confidence in the team.

“We just need to forget this step because situations like this are not going to happen very often. We’ll go on to the next one.”

While hoping that lessons will be learned following the defeat at Wolves, Bellerin and the rest of the Arsenal dressing room were seemingly united in the view that Luiz shouldn’t have been sent off after accidentally tripping Willian Jose when he was through on goal. It was the turning point in the match, with Ruben Neves scoring from the resulting penalty to cancel out Nicolas Pepe’s opener. Joao Moutinho then scored the winner for Wolves with a stunning 30-yard screamer that flew in off a post.

Bellerin took to social media after the game with a cryptic post – sharing a picture of himself, with Wolves captain Conor Coady fist-pumping referee Craig Pawson in the foreground of the image.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was a lot clearer with his views of the incident. He said: “I’ve seen it 10 times in different angles and I cannot tell you where the contact is. If they have another 50 different angles to watch it, maybe I will be surprised. I looked at seven different angles and I cannot see any contact there.”
