Nicky pygmy hippo enjoys hot weather treat

Hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck getting dirty and gritty… as the Lovin’ Spoonful sang.

And oh don’t we know it. At London Zoo, we hear the gorillas are gorging on frozen cucumbers to beat the heat, while pygmy hippo Nicky (pictured) has been surviving on watermelons tossed into her enclosure. Meerkats are feasting on ice cubes with frozen peas a tasty treat at their centre, and the zoo’s bearded pigs have had a daily shower provided by keepers armed with high-power hoses. For those on the Central line, there is similar good news, as one passenger discovered after tweeting the Central line’s controller about conditions in the carriages…

Giovanni Lepori tweeted: ‘#Askcentral The heat inside trains is reaching levels that are certainly dangerous for elderly people and children and I’d imagine that it’s not healthy for the average person either.

“What is being done to solve these unacceptable conditions for which we pay very high prices?”

Fear not, Mr Lepori, replied @centralline – the cavalry are on their way!

“Hi, we’re aware of the heating issues,” tweeted a Central line employee called Sol. “We’ve made improvements to the ventilation systems on the current fleet. New trains are coming in early 2030, under the Deep Tube Upgrade Program which will be delivered with full air cooling systems. Thanks.”

So have no fear, passengers, things will be much better… one day.
