• OUR wholehearted good wishes and support should go to those excellent hard-working men and women who keep our Royal Parks clean in exchange for insultingly low wages and conditions, (Regent’s Park cleaners fight ‘poverty pay’, August 1).

At a time when the royals are whinging about their lavish life-styles being squeezed it’s intolerable that the cleaners should be forced to fight their way out of a hand-to-mouth existence.

And while their direct employers VINCI – a French utilities company – are immediately responsible for their wages, the Toilet Brush trophy for despicable and immoral conduct must go to the Royal Parks for their grubby hand-wringing: “It’s not us: it’s VINCI that set their wage levels.”

That’s why you gave VINCI the contract in the first place, Royal Parks! On the cheap! Is it really too much to expect a bit of common decency from the Royal Parks? Any suggestions where they might stick their much-deserved award?
