An attack on a bookshop is no prank

Friday, 24th August 2018

• HAVING just returned from a traumatising visit to Auschwitz to honour the names of 14 of my murdered relatives, I must protest at Luke Nash Jones’s (Make Britain Great Again) casual dismissal of the thuggish ransacking of Bookmarks (with taunts of “This shop should be burnt down”, as “a prank that went wrong.”, (Tariq Ali says Bookmarks ransacking marks shift in fascist tactics, August 10).

Does he think Nazi book-burning in May 1933 was “a prank”? I was among the 300 supporters of Bookmarks who met in the local church to protest. As Heinrich Heine warned: “They who burn books end up burning people.”
