• THE Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has not been clear in calling for rent arrears to be cleared for renters and outstanding rents to be paid to landlords.

At the last Mayor’s Question Time on May 21 he refused three times to join me in calling for arrears forgiveness.

Government policy, and Labour policy nationally, has said that renters should pay back arrears with a repayment plan, but London’s renters are already so stretched this will cause huge hardship in the capital.

The mayor must stand up now, join Londoners and other politicians like me in saying as loudly as possible that extending the eviction ban is critically urgent, and that all arrears from the coronavirus period should be cleared.
