A library at the Debenhams site could offer a space with civic pride

• IT is many years since Westminster library vacated its prime space on the Marylebone Road, and since then has been itinerant, presently housed in a disused shop on New Cavendish Street.

I write to endorse Jim Hill’s letter (Debenhams empty store could be turned into a library, March 5). The council has spent vast sums looking into relocating to Luxborough Street or Seymour Leisure Centre.

With some commercial imagination from the council and landlords; as well as initiative from the local BIDs, New West End Company etc, the Oxford Street Debenhams site could be converted to a modern library space.

Croydon Clocktower and Birmingham are examples of fantastic libraries across multiple floors, with areas for audiovisual aids, computing, and quiet study spaces.

Likewise, the Debenhams library could also hold business and employment training, refresher courses and information services geared to all the community, including for children on the ground floor.

With the present economic stagnation, along with a café and roof garden restaurant, a “little Waitrose” would serve to generate income and attract customers.

The site could be shared with space for a Met police “station”, post office, citizens’ advice, crèche, and more. It would offer a space with a real social value and civic pride.
