• THERE seem to be inexhaustible suggestions about what could be done with the former police station in Hampstead.

A school or a rock and roll museum! And last week we hear yet another idea for it to be turned (albeit temporarily) into studios for artists, (Old police station cells to be turned into art studios, April 1).

I can’t help feeling that what the area really needs is a central hub for ensuring that the laws which are designed to make people feel secure in their homes and on their streets are enforced without fear or favour.

It would be nice, for example, if all thefts, crimes and the like were to be investigated. Such a sense of security would play a big part in reducing crime and enhancing community spirit.

It’s a shame our prime minister didn’t think of it when, as mayor of London, he sold the building off.

Let’s have a police station!
