SPRING blossomed for friendly gardening rivals in Hampstead and Highgate on Saturday when two top horticulture societies staged competing shows.
Highgate Horticulture Society – a favourite with celebrities such as James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, Truly, Madly, Deeply actress Juliet Stevenson and newsreader Richard Baker – drew crowds at Highgate Scientific and Literary Society in South Grove.
Society president Gavin Doyle, celebrating his 56th wedding anniversary with wife Judy, looked on as she handed each of the major prizes to society chairman Alan Dallman, who cheekily claimed a kiss for each win.
At the bottom of the hill, at Gospel Oak Methodist Church in Agincourt Road, Hampstead Horticulture Society also competed with the Royal wedding and the Grand National for the public’s attention.
Enyd Norman, of Burrard Road, West Hampstead, scooped a prize for best flowering pot plant.
But she said: “I wish I had the same luck with the horses.
“I let somebody else place a bet for me and that’s always a mistake.”
Highgate Horticulture Society’ spring show winners were: Taylor Halsey Challenge Cup for most points in horticultural classes 1-40, Sergeant Bowl for best exhibit in classes 1-23, Brough Tankard for best exhibit in classes 24-40, Diploma for Excellence in Horticulture for pot plants and Diploma for Excellence in Horticulture for cut flowers – Alan Dallman.
Bush Halsey Challenge Cup for most points in decorative classes 41-44 – Marion Arnell-Wilton.
Marjorie Olphert Shield for most points for 11-16 year olds classes – Naomi Smith
Society’s Cup for most points 6-10-year-olds classes – Nathan Glasson.
HHS Millennium Award for most points in five years and under classes – Elsa Pearl.
Hampstead Horticultural Society Winners: Best in Horticulture – Hilda Gill; Best in Floral Art – Audrey Stocker; Best in Domestic – Margaret Scanlon.
