THE man responsible for overseeing criminal cases in England
and Wales had his Dartmouth Park house burgled on Monday night
while he and his family were asleep upstairs.
Director of Public Prosecutions Ken Macdonald, who was appointed
to the position in 2003, was raided by the burglars in the middle
of the night prompting a house to house investigation in
the leafy street where he lives.
Police say personal items were taken but would not confirm their
value. A spokesman said: We are looking for witnesses.
They also confirmed the burglars had broken in to the five-storey
home after forcing a window at the back of the house after they
clambered over a fence in to the back garden.
A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: There was
a break in here a month or so ago but that did not warrant
a house to house door knock by bobbies. It made us wonder what
had gone missing, or whether they were just playing super-tough
to show him they took it seriously.
Another said police had swooped on the street as soon as the burglary
was discovered.
They said: It was pretty chaotic. Police cars were quick
on the scene when the break in was discovered and they were looking
through peoples back gardens.
Mr Macdonald moved into the semi-detached house worth around £1.5m
in the 1990s after buying the home off former Labour
minister Giles Radice.
